Perhaps this is something all textile enthusiasts have in common–whether you create surface patterns like Cressida Bell, construct garments like Yeolee Teng, weave sculptures like Kazuhito Takadoi or make quilts like Jenni Smith. Geometry and mathematics are fundamental to all textile making. Remember the first computer had its origins in the Jacquard Loom invented in 1804!
While the symmetry and structure of an Amish Quilt is visually satisfying, for me it is when the geometry is challenged and the structure disruped by the force of nature, whether this is the will of the material as seen in Ruth Castle’s beautiful modernist baskets or the evidence of the hand of the maker in the godharis quilts of Maharashtra, India. This tension and visual interest are evident in my favourite handmade textiles throughout the world, some of which we feature in this issue.
Māori artist Nikau Hindin–Ngai Tpoto hp, Te Rarawa, Ngpuhi–from Aotearoa, or New Zealand, paints geometric interpretations of star maps with earth pigments onto aute that she beats herself from the bark of the wauke tree, connecting her textile making to botany, astronomy, chemistry and Indigenous knowledge systems. Within the British education system, students are pushed to choose between the arts and sciences at an early age. Were textiles a more important part of the curriculum, educators could use their seductive power as a hook to engage students in the numerous branches of science that intersect textile making.

Polly Leonard, Founder & Editor of Selvedge Magazine

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0550/0957/5083/products/cover105-01_600x600_d06b94e7-0a2a-4573-83bb-5a7451bb8610.png?v=1646204803
selvedge-magazine-issue-106
Selvedge Magazine - Issue 106

May / June 2022

Published 15 April, 2022

CLOTH & IDENTITY

With war once again in Europe a reality, it seems timely for Selvedge to examine flags: their importance, heritage, and meaning. Ostensibly, a flag is a piece of cloth onto which meaning is projected. They can mean different things to different people: a symbol of both love and hate, and both freedom and oppression. Flags can unite, divide, and even terrorise. In this issue, we explore how a piece of cloth has been transformed into one of the most powerful symbols in our cultural repertoire. In her article, You Can't Eat a Flag, Dr Catherine Harper examines how artists across the world have used flags to subvert and question our society. Johann Wolfgang Goethe, the German writer, proclaimed that “a country starts with a name and a flag and then becomes them.” Flags unquestionably stir loyalty: citizens pledge allegiance to, and use the desecration of, flags as a protest or way to express political dissent. Generations of the military have lived and died for a flag on the battlefield. In military funerals, the flag is draped over the coffin, eventually with reverence these colours are laid up in churches, the length and breadth of England turned to dust. When we celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June, the sales of flags and bunting will boom. During the celebrations, spare a thought for the power of the flag. Of course, it is not just flags that communicate identity. Other textiles have been used to brand a nation, such as Israel’s fashion diplomacy in the postwar years, and as a symbol of cultural identity, communicated through the Romanian blouse. We dive deep into this cultural icon and invite you to make your own no-waste blouse in our workshop. When cultural identity is threatened it is often textiles that artists turn to express their descent, as we see in the delicate powerful stitched work of Belarusian Rufina Bazlova and the Sami artist, Britta Marakatt-Labba.

Polly Leonard, Founder & Editor of Selvedge Magazine

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0550/0957/5083/products/cover106-04_d5270bff-fe2f-402a-bc93-c6e2e5f2ba12.webp?v=1658806299
selvedge-magazine-issue-107
Selvedge Magazine - Issue 107

July / August 2022 Published 15 June, 2022

HIGH SUMMER: Keeping Cool in Linen and Lace

Linen is one of the oldest and most environmentally sustainable fibres. It has undoubted ethical and aesthetic appeal. Derived from the flax plant, the second-most productive fibre crop, it is surpassed only by hemp. Linen flourishes organically, and in contrast to cotton, needs only rainwater to thrive, which fortunately is in abundance in the swath of land that stretches along the coast from Brittany in France through Flanders to Friesland in the Netherlands, where the crop is cultivated today. The processing of linen is also simple and can be undertaken domestically, as is demonstrated by several projects, described in Dr John Ennis’ article ‘The Good Seed on the Land’, that have successfully reintroduced linen cultivation across Europe. We are watching the weather with anticipation for just the right moment for the harvest to begin at the Linen Project in the Netherlands which will be live-streamed as a Slow TV experience. See the website for updates.

Linen has strong hollow fibres with almost no elasticity. Its ability to absorb 20% of its weight in moisture makes it an ideal summer fabric, but when this moisture evaporates, the fibres are prone to crease. This is a quality that has been exploited through the centuries by lacemakers in Flanders and the coiffes of Brittany, as well as contemporary artists like Mercedes Vincente, who relies on linen’s ability to hold a fold in her shell-inspired sculpture.

Linen lost favour in the late 20th century partly due to the perception that it was a high-maintenance fibre; yet, once formality was abandoned in favour of a more casual look, linen took off again. In this issue, we explore the work of makers who employ the relaxed quality of linen to great effect: recently deceased Alison Morton, who wove extraordinary-ordinary textiles, and Jackie Parsons is inspired by the Dutch masters’ uber-comfortable, informal domestic bliss.

The lustre and softness of linen make it an obvious choice for printers, seen in the contemporary stencilled work of Pauline Greuell in the Netherlands, as well as, in a tiny town near Italy’s northeastern coast, where the unique art of handmade, rust-printed textiles is still alive thanks to a piece of living history: a massive stone-and-wood mangle designed, in part, by Leonardo da Vinci.

As the mercury rises, our attention turns to the sun and we look at ‘The New Sun’, a body of work by Caroline McQuarrie, that explores what life might have been like for the women living with or alongside the miners in early-colonial Aotearoa New Zealand.

Finally, representations of ‘Solar Worship & Symbolism’ amongst Indian and Mexican communities by Sophie Vent show us the importance of the warmth of the sun in all our lives. But now that governments have entered the fray with supportive subsidies, and organic farmers are making a concerted marketing effort to illustrate the value of this methodology, growth in the organic movement has accelerated. From its origins to today’s explosive industry expansion, we see how the organic food industry has grown over the last half-century into a global phenomenon.

Communicating the key benefits of this type of agriculture is critical as it is a more expensive method of production, resulting in pricey products. Today two-thirds of households buy organic products and consumers are increasingly interested in the provenance of their purchases. The move towards organic offerings doesn’t end at the plate — instead, shoppers are looking for holistic options across the board.

So why are fibre farmers lagging behind? Textiles are tricky: the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ is a bit of a paradox when it comes to clothing. Fast fashion may be poorly constructed and quickly falls apart but fossil fuel fabrics actually last way longer than farmed fabrics. Despite the current trend for darning, it is a hard sell to convince consumers that they should spend ten times more on a wool sweater so they have the luxury of darning the elbows when they rub through. It is also an encyclopedia of history. In the case of the Langartera, it is the embodiment of Jewish, Muslim and Catholic influences on the history of a place. A similar layering of material archaeology is also evident in the contrasting patterns played off against each other across the globe in the portraits of Corina Gertz, which elevate community over individuality. Bringing us up to date Claudia Muñoz Morales introduces us to the ways in which embroidery artisans across Mexico are using the rich cultural history found in their embroidery to uplift communities.

This is echoed in a project initiated by the designer Larissa Van Planta working to bring a new life to pre-loved clothes and a new future to Palestinian refugees living in Lebanese refugee camps through embroidery. The embroidery produced in Palestine is famed the world over and in the run-up to the holidays, it seemed appropriate to include an in-depth exposé on embroidery from Bethlehem by Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood. Staying in Palestine, Annie Oakley Waterman explores the once thriving craft community, now struggling to overcome the obstacles caused by the conflict in the region and finds resilience and hope for the future.

Political instability can bring about unexpected and engaging art. It can influence an individual artist’s career for a lifetime. Geopolitical and social upheaval, including the war in Ukraine, has shaken European artists — those who fled Europe, those who worked under repressive regimes and those who live there now. Colour – the stuff of science and poetry, art and beauty – is the focus of this issue. Baker-Miller Pink, a tone of pink which has been observed to temporarily reduce hostile, violent, or aggressive behaviour by temporarily lowering heart rate and blood pressure, is often used to paint holding cells in police stations. At a time when we all need our mood-lifting, I am advocating that we introduce some colour into our lives.

Marrs Green is a blue-green shade, a rich teal hue that, in 2017, won The World's Favourite Colour, a major global survey by British paper merchant G.F. Smith. The colour was submitted by Annie Marrs, a UNESCO worker from Dundee, in Scotland, who was inspired by the River Tay. We take the colour of water, the sea, and the sky as a starting point for our adventure. Indigo is perhaps the dye that captures the imagination more than any other. The alchemy of the oxidisation process, when the cloth emerges from the dye bath and changes from yellow, through green, to blue, is magical. This ancient practice is captured by Caroline Gutman in her images of Miao women in Guizhou Province, China. Indigo is inextricably linked to denim; the world's go-to staple, with half the population wearing denim jeans at any given time. That is a lot of jeans. We catch up with Nece Gene in India, a company making new pieces from discarded denim. A love of vintage denim also inspired Kakuo Kaji to devote his life to the art and science of natural indigo propagation and fermentation, as seen in a new exhibition at the Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile, in Hong Kong.

Across the globe, we see colour from the earth put to good effect: in textiles produced in Bhutan, in large-scale industrial production in Italy, as well as in artisan craft in India. More subtle hues are celebrated in the traditional double-cloth blankets, woven in Wales for centuries. This once-endangered industry has been given a new lease on life by innovative approaches to succession, adopted by tenacious individuals determined to succeed against the odds. Daniel Harris, founder of the London Cloth Company and a passionate advocate of onshoring manufacturing, is spearheading the revival of the British textile industry. Recycling is nothing new. In the issue, we explore the market for second-hand clothes at Harvard University in the 1850s, the endeavours on both sides of the pond during the depression of the 1930s, and the shortages imposed by rationing during the Second World War when necessity truly was the mother of invention.

Bringing us up to date, Chrispina Ffrench explained to us that the design process involved in reusing fabrics is challenging by its limitations. There are fewer options, but more creative choices are required at each step of production requiring makers to use judgment. This can enhance the connection between maker and product, and result in a sense of pride which in turn enhances the quality of life.

Upcycling lacks the standard and predictable aesthetic of new and holds stories, history, and meaning, but is not an inexpensive way to work. Most upcycled materials are inconsistent in terms of colour, quality, size, etc; even when purchased in volume, all aspects of costing, therefore, are inconsistent meaning that the law of averages plays a starring role. When a company manufactures jeans using yardage, costs are straightforward. The variable cost in this production model lands squarely in workforce productivity. Things like shop layout, stellar management, employee morale, and reasonable expectations help with efficiency in this setting. When a company is manufacturing jeans from patches of other jeans that have passed their wearable lifespan, costing requires that an average cost of materials is found. Finding that average is a complex equation taking things like cleaning, fabric quality and consistency and size into consideration, and this is just the back end.

Designing with recycled materials is a whole other can of worms. Running production with upcycled clothing, manufacturers’ waste or deadstock as raw material sets a challenge of its own. When designing with post-consumer clothing it is cost-effective and fun to use original details in fresh ways. Rather than creating a button placket, repurpose one from a garment you are no longer able to use. You can use shoulder seams as shoulder seams, pockets can be carefully harvested and incorporated. Cuffs make great cuffs. Part of the delight found while upcycling textiles comes from ascertaining which elements of a discarded garment still have integrity and can be given a new life and which parts are worn out. What can be created with worn-out elements?

We predict that this trend will run and run and see it not only in contemporary works such as Jenni Stuart-Anderson's ‘Global Warming’ rug commissioned to promote Greta Thunberg’s ‘The Climate Book’ but also in the collections of fashion designers from Grey Lauren and Alexander McQueen to Elizabeth Wilson, who has been repurposing antique kimono fabrics sourced in Japan into stylish contemporary garments for 45 years. All of these designers make good use of an aesthetic based on using craft skills to combine small elements of repurposed fabrics to create rich new multi-textured and multi-coloured surfaces. Find out more about recycling at Crispina Ffrench’s virtual summit ‘Rags to Riches’ on 12-14 April 2023. See you there.

Polly Leonard

Published 15 February

Inside are 12 exceptionally beautiful long-form stories celebrating the creative lives and work of a diverse group of artists, artisans and creatives from around the world.

Stories of Salt & Starlight by Ruth Steadman

Domino Whisker, an embroidery artist born in Ireland and raised in Los Angeles, who found her creative voice almost by accident five years ago after moving home to Dublin to care for her father, artist Charlie Whisker, at the beginning of his Alzheimer's disease diagnosis.

My Feldt and Linda Lomelino who met inside My’s bakery, Feldts Bröd och Konfekt, in their town of Halmstad, Sweden. We trace the routes of fibres and fabrics across centuries to and from the north of England, from the so-called “slave cloth,” spun and woven by hand on the Pennine moors, to the bales of used fast fashion that make their way from British High Streets to the markets and toxic mountains of waste in West Africa.

In this issue, we discover that all roads lead to Lancashire, such as the streets of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India, known as the “Manchester of the East,” and where Mahatma Gandhi found support for his freedom struggle from Indigenous mill owners. Gandhi, in turn, was inspired by the work of Ethel Mairet, who had found inspiration in the handweaving she observed when visiting (Ceylon) Sri Lanka. Using the sites and spaces left by the textile industry, including the Cotton Exchange in Blackburn, as inspiration, context, and venue, we might ask: can making textiles be regenerative? In response, artists from around the world present sustainable relationships between the land, the people who live on it, and the textiles that come from it, investigating pre-industrial models from homegrown, handspun flax in Blackburn to cotton production in Benin.

This issue is edited in collaboration with Laurie Peake of the British Textile Biennial, for whose support I am incredibly grateful. The importance of role models can’t be overestimated, especially for emerging makers. As a new graduate over thirty years ago, I was fortunate to benefit from talented teachers and advocates whose belief in my ability far outstretched my own; Chrissie White and Mary Schoeser are familiar names in the textile world, but our community is peppered with such pioneers whose vision and tenacity have impacted society beyond their immediate circle. In this issue, we spotlight these unsung heroes: Jenny Tiramani, the principal of the School of Historic Dress, whose force of personality galvanised a team of enthusiasts to create a world-leading institution. Dan Driscoll, the founder of The Anou, developed a computer system based on pictograms to give illiterate artisans in Morocco agency over selling their work to a global audience. The founders of NGOs in Kutch, India, who have worked tirelessly for decades to elevate and preserve the region’s unique crafts and eliminate exploitation. Others, such as Her Majesty Queen Azizh of Malaysia’s Royal Pahang Weaving prison project, use their privileged platform to benefit others. We celebrate these individuals whose tenacity has turned their passion to good use.

Over the last decade, we have seen entrepreneurs and influencers take centre stage as the monetising of crafts has come to represent success in our community. Some early adopters have garnered a large following, as described by Beth Wingarder in her article Historic Clothing Come Back and we thank them for enriching our lives. It is a seductive ideology that declares anyone and everyone can achieve work-life balance by pumping their passion for profit. The trend exacerbated by the cost of living crisis, accessibility of platforms such as Etsy and Folksy, the romanticised version of the life of craftspeople portrayed on Instagram and the minimal financial outlay needed to initiate textile crafts. This is only part of the story. The labour innate to many textile crafts conflicts with the profit motive, killing the joy and leaving makers working long hours to fulfill orders for little remuneration.

I am inspired by Dr. Christine Millar, who states that sewing as a hobby allows her to engage in art on her terms. Scarcity and value were comfortable bedfellows in a pre-industrial society, but today, when we live in a world of abundance, to what and how we assign value is a more challenging question. This quandary accounts in part for the resurgence of craft in the 21st century, and also perhaps why we struggle with the idea of intangible cultural heritage in the UK, as outlined by David Carpenter in his article, “Culture Wars: Crafts’ Colonial Legacy.” Manual dexterity and craft skills are rare in contemporary society, and when the evidence of such skills are observed in an object, it gains kudos. It is a win-win if the products also solve issues of the day, such as the endemic problem of landfills. Benchmark examples include Ashita Singhal of Piawand, who upcycles waste into valuable new products, and Celia Pym, the mother of modern mending, who gives value to throw-away fossil-fibre-derived fast fashion with visible mending.

In her article, “The Great Uncut,” Sarah E. Braddock Clarke highlights wasteful and wasteless pattern cutting and signposts of non-Western clothing construction as a more conscious approach. Garments which maintain the integrity of the uncut cloth are inherently less wasteful and more flexible than conventional cut-and-sew construction, as we see in Rta Kapur Chishti’s article on the sari, beautifully illustrated by Paula Sanz Caballero. In this issue, we consider uncut cloth in its multiple forms, including the significance of the turban in Sikh culture and question its adoption as a fashion accessory. The hijab, a site of political protest in contemporary Iran, is scrutinised. As is the Kashmir shawl, an example of a global commodity linked to colonialism and consumerism. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team for going above and beyond in putting the magazine together in my absence, to Katerina, Catherine, Florencia, Kate, and Ella – without your dedication, this issue simply would not have been possible. For instance, the special relationship between teacher and student is explored in Nicola Miles’s article about her teacher and mentor, Lou Taylor. In this article, Taylor describes the pleasure of watching students encounter historic garments for the first time. In another story, we discover how Nike Davies-Okundaye balances the pleasure of solitary work and what she gains from sharing her skills by burning the midnight oil!

Successful collaborations come in many forms with different levels of cooperation. Madrid-based Milliners Maleza joined forces with Claudy Jongstra in her LOADS project – the resulting hats were the outcome of discrete contributions from both designers. Similarly, when designer Odette Blum invited 27 artists to respond to a theme, she gave them a free hand – the project culminated in a book that celebrates their different visions. Collaborations with more rigid external parameters require more skilled negotiations, as Elizabeth King, head of Costume Production at the Royal Opera House in London, explains. Yet, when costume designer Sandy Powell realised a director’s vision, ultimate insight, intuition, and even greater communication were needed.

During my time in India, I came face-to-face with collaborations between artisans and designers where both parties were equally respected. From this position of strength, they could overcome the challenges facing the craft community. The information age has brought new opportunities and the promise of a better quality of life, but also threatens the survival of the intangible cultural heritage of hand work. Thao Phuong shares her account of how artisan Phan Thi Thuan navigates the symbiotic relationship between tourists and craft in Vietnam by contributing to the greater interest in lotus-silk weaving and deftly demonstrating how crafts can survive hand in hand with tourism.

Ramesh Menon of Save the Loom offers a word of warning in Vinita Makhija’s article “Hope for Handloom,” about “handmade being positioned on the premise of charity.” He also notes, “Most who venture to support continue to play this card, damaging the sector. Handmade is the ultimate luxury and needs to be positioned and marketed in that realm,” views shared by Madhu Vaishnav of Saheli Women, a co-operative based in Rajasthan. In a round-table conversation, Makhaja’s panel contributed insights into how technology can be used in tandem with the craft sector for mutual benefit.
